- Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Surgical Education
Description
The Department of Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a one-year position beginning as soon as January 2027, but no later than July 2027, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year based on performance and productivity. The fellow will work under the mentorship of Brendan C. Visser, MD, Professor and Chief of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery.
The fellow will collaborate with surgeons across the Department to turn operative footage, surgical anatomy, technical expertise, and clinical decision-making into educational videos for trainees and practicing surgeons. A central responsibility will be advancing the open-access Stanford HPB Surgery Video Library and developing new video libraries in other specialties, with the long-term goal of assembling a comprehensive General Surgery video library.

The position offers close collaboration with surgeons across specialties, opportunities to build an academic network, and the chance to present work at national and international meetings.
Surgical Video Education and Production
Video production will be the fellow’s primary responsibility. The videos teach more than operative steps: they cover surgical indications, anatomy, operative planning, technical decisions, and perioperative care. A strong surgical foundation and meaningful clinical exposure to the care of surgical patients are therefore essential.
Experience creating or editing videos, including with Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, is highly valued but not required. Skills in illustration, animation, narration, or other educational media are also welcome.
Surgical Education and Research Opportunities
The fellow will work with faculty, residents, and surgical educators to create videos on anatomy, operative techniques, individual procedural steps, instrumentation, surgical technology, and clinical concepts relevant to General Surgery. The role may include collaboration with the Goodman Surgical Education Center to develop and evaluate new approaches to surgical education.
Depending on their interests and productivity, the fellow may also participate in clinical or surgical education research, prepare peer-reviewed manuscripts, and present at scientific meetings.
Requirements
American and international medical graduates, current General Surgery residents, and surgical residency graduates are encouraged to apply. Competitive candidates will demonstrate:
- Substantial clinical exposure to surgery and a strong grasp of surgical anatomy and operative principles
- A serious interest in General Surgery or a related surgical field
- Initiative, professionalism, organization, and attention to detail
- The ability to work independently and collaborate across teams
- Full professional proficiency in written and spoken English
Research and video editing experience are valued but not required. The successful candidate should be eager to learn and committed to producing accurate, engaging surgical education.
Stanford University School of Medicine is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse and inclusive community. The position offers a competitive salary and full Stanford University benefits. Candidates selected for further consideration will be invited to interview.
