- PGY1 Preliminary Surgery Resident
Description
The General Surgery Residency Program at Jefferson Einstein Medical Education, based at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital, is seeking applicants for an unexpected Preliminary PGY-1 resident opening beginning July 1, 2026.
This is a one-year, ACGME-accredited preliminary position in General Surgery within a high-volume academic and community-based training environment. The resident will participate fully in the clinical, educational, and professional activities of the residency program and will work closely with faculty and residents across the Jefferson Einstein system. The position offers broad exposure to general surgery, acute care surgery, trauma, critical care, and subspecialty services within a structured residency program committed to strong operative experience, supervision, professionalism, and resident development.
Applicants must be graduates of an accredited medical school and eligible for appointment to an ACGME-accredited residency program. Candidates should demonstrate strong academic performance, professionalism, effective communication skills, and a serious commitment to surgical training.

Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered:
Completion of an ERAS application, with the full application available for review
USMLE Step 1 score
USMLE Step 2 CK score
Current curriculum vitae
Medical school transcript
MSPE (Dean’s Letter)
Personal statement
Recent letters of recommendation, preferably including at least one from a surgeon, department chair, or program director
ECFMG certification, if applicable
Eligibility to begin residency training in Pennsylvania and to satisfy all Jefferson Einstein Medical Education onboarding and employment requirements
Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, reliability, a strong work ethic, and the interpersonal skills required to function effectively in a surgical training environment.
